[Back to Tennessee]
KNOXVILLE
I've been through Knoxville on I-40 plenty of times, though I've never visited the city. There is one signal I stopped at the very edge of the city off the interstate, though I believe it's state maintained. These photos were taken on June 6th, 2015
Lovell Rd & I-40 E Exit 374
This intersection features all Chapel Hill signals, with aluminum red sections and poly yellow and greens, hanging in the typical Tennessee fashion from disconnect hangers with the top portions of the backplates removed for them. (I like disconnect hangers on signals without backplates, or when the door is on the back, but I personally think it looks bad to cut the top off the backplate off like this.) The signals themselves are not particularly notable; however, one of them, facing the offramp, has a fairly unique configuration. It has three green indications -- ball, left arrow, and right arrow -- for a R-Y-G-GLA-GRA configuration. It is for the center lane, which allows movement in any direction. There is a turn lane on either side as well, and the signal is appropriately flanked by R-YLA-GLA and R-YRA-GRA signals. This 5-section triple-green configuration would make sense in a lot of intersection setups, but for some reason is something you rarely see. I think it looks pretty cool. These were installed between 2012 and 2015; previously, there were just two 3-section left turn signals facing the approach. The intersection for the westbound offramp is an identical install, also with a 5-section triple-green signal.
